Invoking the Blessings of God—Part 4

Why Does God Bless us Anyway?
Because we do good things and we deserve it? Well, at least that is what a few of my associates would say.
Because we are heirs to the throne and we have right to it?
Because we can just believe we can, therefore since we believe we receive?

Oh, the power of WOF! Word of faith, that is. It says “Believe that you will receive it, and you will!” With this advice I suppose that we should not consult God, trust in our own hearts, and take up our own council: not!

1st. God blesses people because He wants to. God needs nothing, He is whole and complete in His nature: entirely holy and perfect. Therefore He is not obligated to any one or thing. He chooses to love us, therefore we receive blessings. God blesses us because He loves us, because He wants to love us, not because we love Him. In fact, there is none who loves God by their own ability; only by the work of God in our hearts can one love God.

2nd. God blesses people so that they can bless others. For instance: He blesses us with love so that we can love one another – to show that we are His disciples. So, it all comes back to Him anyway.

I think I will leave you, to close this series, with an entire chapter of the Bible to read. It is not long, but it is highly relevant. When it comes down to the bottom line, God blesses us to glorify Himself. This, now, I will leave you with:

Psalm67
May God be gracious to us and bless us
and make his face to shine upon us,
Selah

that your way may be known on earth,
your saving power among all nations.
Let the peoples praise you, O God;
let all the peoples praise you!
Let the nations be glad and sing for joy,
for you judge the peoples with equity
and guide the nations upon earth.
Selah

Let the peoples praise you, O God;
let all the peoples praise you!

The earth has yielded its increase;
God, our God, shall bless us.
God shall bless us;
let all the ends of the earth fear him!

    Great series. I’ve really enjoyed reading these. It’s comforting to know that God blesses us because He is good and wants to. I love Matthew 7:11: “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!”
    I think it’s also important that we be clear what the Bible considers to be “good blessings/gifts”. Most of the time it’s referring to the best gift: God’s unmerited favor, the righteousness of the Father through God-given faith in the Son, the Holy Spirit… however you wish to describe union with God.
    This is why I have trouble with the “Health and Wealth” preachers who claim that the blessings of God or the favor of God refer to good health and promotions. God can choose to bless us that way, but that’s not what Scripture refers to and that’s not what we are to set our hope on or find our joy in. That’s too much a short-sighted and worldly view of how God blesses those He’s called. God isn’t necessarily concerned with the petty gifts of money and status… He’s into giving His creation ultimate joy by giving of Himself. He gives what eternally satisfies. He’s good at blessing ;)
