Invoking the Blessing of God—Part 1

As the first part in this series, we will simply take a brief look at what the blessings of God are. Just what, really, is God’s blessing?

Well, first off, let us take a look around ourselves. What do you see? In the broadest sense, everything we see is a blessing from God. Now, I am not referring at this time to injustice or justice, rather simply acknowledge the empirical blessing of God. There are countless blessing surrounding you; quite literally.  Actually, what about the immediate blessings surrounding you? i.e. your clothing – unless, of course, you are not wearing any, and that would just be strange! If it were not for the earth’s resources – which God created – we would never have such luxury of the simplest of blessings, i.e. clothing.

Now, I know, this is really simple, but it is often overlooked. I do not really want to get into all of the empirical blessings (rain, shine, etc.), I just want to acknowledge them. This is crucial for our attitude of gratitude, but not my goal! What I want to get more involved with is the spiritual blessings of God.

Oh, how the numerous spiritual blessings from God!
Oh how the massive quantities of the blessings from the
     Spirit! – me

That is why I will only be covering them in their strictest sense. What I mean by this, is that there is a hierarchy of categories the blessings flow. In other words, the blessing of protection (Duet. 28:7) would ultimately be under God’s providence; the blessing of the promise to see God from being pure in heart (Matt. 5:8; see this link also) would ultimately fall under Salvation by means of God making that person’s heart pure/clean (not that they can do it themselves), and ultimately this wouldn’t happen until the heart is entirely clean, that is, when it enters heaven. And one more, just as a cover-all blessing definer. Generally speaking, a person receives blessings from God simply because (which I am now hinting to part 2) God is their LORD.

So, all people receive blessings from God (rain, shine, etc.), but only some people receive special blessings apart from the empirical. A bold statement? Yes. Will it offend someone? Maybe, who knows? I am not really concerned with that. In this series, my concern is for the Christian to understand better the grace of God and for the unbeliever to see how wonderfully blessed they can be if God is their LORD.

Until next time, Be Blessed!
