WARNING :: Brace yourself for the following post
Yesterday I read a post from someone about the idea of Haiti relief funds. Basically, he was upset from seeing all the Haiti relief signs and was expressing his discontent about such activities. His premise is that why are we so focused on Haiti when we could be helping the people in America.
What followed his post were a couple of other people who approved of his comment. 5 People “liked” his post, while 3 others approved by their comments. One of them actually gave a hearty “Amen.”
Basically, he was disturbed that there are Red Cross signs asking for Haiti relief, and was wondering if Haiti had signs asking for American relief funds.
This disturbed me. Quite a bit, actually.
And to top it off, he mentioned how the devastation in Haiti was likely the result of their “pact” with Satan.
This disturbed me too.
Look, here’s the deal. I expect something like this from someone who is not a follower of Christ.
Really. Who do we think we are? Better than the Haitians? Better than Africans? Better than Ethiopians? Better than “sinners” who supposedly made a pact with Satan?
I think not.
First off, every person on the face of this earth is on the same plane: we’re all sinners, deserving of equal punishment (Rom. 3:9). None of us are righteous or were even seeking after God (Rom. 3:10).
We are all equal sinners, and I don’t care what SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS you are of. There’s no distinction (Rom. 3:23).
Do we really think we are better here in America? This was a NATIONAL disaster, folks! National!
Please understand that I haven’t done anything to help the Haitian people, but this does not mean I think they are undeserving.
Actually, we are all undeserving. All of us. What gives us Americans the right to any sort of deliverance? Did we earn it by our pompous attitudes?
But wait, I don’t want anyone to think I am perfect. Without the intervention of Christ Jesus, I am just a narcissistic, self-absorbed, lying, God-hating, hypocritical, sin-loving, immoral, totally depraved, hell-bound, and a making-pacts-with-Satan child of wrath.
I don’t deserve kindness.
I don’t deserve life.
I don’t deserve to have a safe home in America.
I don’t deserve a fridge full of food.
I don’t deserve healthy children.
I don’t deserve the ability to have a full-time job.
I don’t deserve the opportunity for higher education.
I don’t deserve to be saved from distress.
I don’t deserve relief.
I don’t deserve freedom.
I don’t deserve love.
I don’t deserve for someone from a different land to come down and deliver me.
In reality, I don’t deserve Jesus. But thank God He came down and loved me IN SPITE of myself…
Thank God.
And I hope and pray that we don’t sit on our comfy tooshes thinking the Haitian people have deserved what they got while we think we are somehow better.
We’re not.
So thank you America for stepping into a world not of your own for the good of someone else, to which you will likely receive absolutely nothing in return.

awesome Dude!!!!!
I simply can NOT understand how someone can behave in such a callous way.
No….I can. Because there is only One Thing that keeps me from joining in that unwholesome "Amen chorus": The Holy Spirit.
Amen to that. Thank God He keeps us from our potential wickedness!

While many go to church every Sunday, Satan never misses a day.
I agree. We are so fortunate in America. For some reason, God has chosen to make that so, but it's not because we deserve it, or because we are better than anyone else. Thank God that he has chosen to bless me with a warm bed, full belly and an endless supply of water! etc. Things that many people wouldn't even know what to do with. I would be willing to put money on the fact that if I were in the situation the Haitian people are in, they would look much more deserving standing next to me!!
Thanks for you input. I totally agree. It's funny how we never consider the fact that we had no bearing on what country we were born in.
You are most correct, Martin.
I got fired up at work the day of the earthquake because some old school guy made the same comment.. about how we have our own starving kids in America. I kinda got strait with him because I have ties to Haiti. My father did mission work there, and we had a Haitian man come stay in our home on the regular when he came to America. The way I look at it, if a poor family saw their neighbors house burning down, they'd help before they considered that since their kids need food, their not able to spare anything., Americans will always have poor and needy people, and unless one is getting off their duff to personally give funds and time to the poor and needy in America, he/she needs to keep their pie hole shut when it comes to how much helping goes out to other countries. At least take time to consider how much "necessities" you could do without to help others. If you want to help people, you help regardless of who they are or where they live. I'm guilty of not helping enough myself, but really…

Rant on. That's what this post was for.

That guy you quoted is completely psychotic.
But you know what? So are you.
Your beliefs degrade all humanity, and the sooner ideas like that die out, the better off we will all be.
Hi Mark. Thanks for stopping by. I take it you're an atheist?

So what ideas would you have us believe, then, Mark?
Love what you've written here. While I DO think we have fallen terribly short in taking care of the needy in America, the most needy person in America still has much more hope than people in Haiti. It's mostly racism, I suspect. Pact with the devil? We were all BORN under one, dude. The only way out is Christ. The only reason that "pact" still exists is because WE Americans say that it does. Satan does not have claim to a single soul that Christ paid for on the cross, whether that person is in Haiti or in New York City or in Little Rock. We need to BE the church and be like Christ.
Amen brother!
