Can You Hear Me Now?

No. Please speak louder.

Lately I’ve been able to have some good conversations with a guy I’ve been working with.

In these conversations, we talk about work, our families, our interests, the Bible, theology, philosophy, and how disadvantageous it is to pack fiber bars into our lunches.

(I’ll let that one sink in)

There are probably a few other categories that I missed.

One thing we were talking about that has led to some really good conversation is the idea of our calling.

That’s right. What is our calling?

More specifically, what is our calling as Christians?

Is it to be employees of our companies? Is it to build businesses? Is it to be healthy? Is it to prosper? Is it to have a happy life? Is it to be a parent? Is it to be a friend? Is it to be victorious? Is it to be confident?

Is it to be a leader?

What is it already!?

Leadership and Apologetics

Take ME There! Two highly potential qualities often not viewed in the same boat.

After reading an article discussing the role of apologetics, I have been thinking about how it fits in with leadership.

Do they fit in with each other? And if they do, what should it look like?

There is definitely a right way and a wrong way of doing this.

I have been in leadership circles that have done at least one of the three of these, if not more:

  1. Lead by ordering
  2. Lead by convincing
  3. Lead by winning

Looking Forward

There was a time when shape, fitness, and health were of no concern. Since passing the wondrous age of 15, the concern slightly emerges. Reaching the age of 30, my fat-to-muscle ratio inclines me to consider taking interest in my physical well being—not without the help of my incredibly low levels of cardiovascular stamina!

As a youngster (which would include teenage years) I have always been quite the energetic one. No sports for me, just run, run, run all over the neighborhood; bicycles, skateboards, rollerblades, fighting—you name it! Those were the Happy Days!

It was nothing for me to take up a working trade that demanded much physical activity. That being said, I began a professional occupation of installing flooring products at about 17 years of age. Two years later I would be self employed, busting you know what to make the big bucks.

And have it biggie sized.

Many of us have busy lives and hectic schedules. I can certainly vouch for that.

People have jobs, families, side jobs, school, organizations, and other parties they are committed to.

As a personal commentary to this, I am a husband, dad, college student, have ministry commitments at church, write on this here blog, write on that there blog, and oh yeah follow Jesus.

We’ve all got our lives to manage, and at times it can be a lot to manage. Especially the unnecessary things we add to our lives.

In other words: It’s tough to be responsible!

So how do we (“I”) deal with this?

Focus: It’s Un-Habitual

Focus is crucial to accomplishing any goal.

In the process of sorting the beans (pun intended) of life, we have to figure out which ones we spend more time focusing on.

Some slip through the cracks, while others we cannot neglect.

One of these we know we cannot neglect our focus on our relationship with Jesus.

In this relationship there are a few distinct aspects that every Christian ought to be focusing on.

They are like hinges to a door that need greased in order to stay free-swinging.

Some of the hinges a Christian should always be greasing are:

  • Prayer
  • Understanding
  • Worship
  • Of course there are more, but why should we focus on these?

The first in the list—Prayer—is something I have not the ability to speak with much authority.

    T.H.I.N.C., Christ-Centered Bible Study, Part 3

    Focus on Jesus
Four weeks ago we launched a 5-part series on how to study the Bible for Demian Farnworth on Fallen and Flawed.

    This is a Christ-centered approach where we use the acronym T. H. I. N. C. as a study aid.

Part one was T for “Trust”—that’s where we begin—and part two was H for “Halting”—when Scripture causes us to put on the brakes.

    Leadership and Vision

    They go hand-in-hand.

With it, a leader can be highly effective.

Without it, well, quite the opposite.

Have you been in leadership, or have seen effective and even ineffective leadership?

    I have.

And I have been on both sides of the game.

I’ve been the recipient, and I’ve been the donor.

Following is some quick tips and reminders to take with you in your leadership journey.

    1. Bring the vision to them.
