So It’s That Time Again, eh?

Twin Pumkins

Are you hesitant on participating?

Well, I could understand if you are. I have talked to quite a few people who believes that Halloween is of the devil and Christians are participating in the occult if they participate in Halloween. Then there are those who do not necessarily think so. What ever position you take, I would like to say a bit about it all. Just a bit, though.

What power does it hold?

If halloween is the participation of pagan worship, then it must hold some intrinsic power, right? Read more

It’s Been A Rough Week

Illness, Yuk!

And the weekend is sounding better even as I write this sentence.

Some of you may know this, but for those of you who don’t, I have finally found a job that pays more than $9.00-10/hr. I think this economy buzz causes people to not want to spend or hire, even when it IS safe. So, finding a job has been rather difficult. I started this Monday at a place that installs office furniture for commercial businesses. It’s not the desired job, but it renders that commodity we all like having: money (is money a commodity?).

I get to meet some new folks, hopefully create some relationships, and possibly even share the Gospel. Actually, I was able to do that with a person on my first day! I had no intentions on talking to this person about Jesus (just because it was my first day), but it came up and we talked about it! That was really cool, but what hasn’t been cool is the fact that I’ve been sick for about a week now. Read more

Philosopher’s Progress to Truth

A collage of four precursors of Existentialism...
Image via Wikipedia

The following is a poem I wrote about a philosopher‘s journey toward truth.

In this poem, I depict a philosopher who is uncertain of whether or not he can actually know anything. In his journey, he follows where evidence leads. Open to these truths he is not yet aware of, he begins to believe in actual truth. I think the Christian existentialist can actually overcome the idea of the lack of certainty. Faith can be something of substance, rather than a blind leap against rationale.

What truth be known
to lives be thrown
of heav’nly mysteries,
and cosmos, galaxies?

What light be shed?
What truth be told?
To the undead,
what rest behold?

Leave not the soul
in constant search.
Give heart, give strength
from since its birth

5:30 AM Comes Early!

Yikes! Coal Mining!

Especially when you’re used to sleeping until 9!

Well, at least that’s about what my sleep schedule has been the past 5-6 months or so. You see, many of you know I have been looking for work (since February!) and that I have had a very difficult time trying to find it. Recently, I’ve been going through an interview process with a furniture installation company. They install furniture for commercial businesses.

I’m really not wanting this kind of job, but it’s better than coal mining! Read more

Take a moment and tell us what this passage means

Zechariah 8:14-15 in multiple translations:

“This is what the LORD Almighty says: “Just as I had determined to bring disaster upon you and showed no pity when your fathers angered me,” says the LORD Almighty, “so now I have determined to do good again to Jerusalem and Judah. Do not be afraid.” Zech. 8:14-15, NIV

“For thus says the LORD of hosts, ‘Just as I purposed to do harm to you when your fathers provoked Me to wrath,’ says the LORD of hosts, ‘and I have not relented, so I have again purposed in these days to do good to Jerusalem and to the house of Judah. Do not fear!” Zech. 8:14-15, NASB

What’s In YOUR Destiny?

What_s in Your destiny!

As opposed to your wallet . . .

Maybe you’ve once been a victim of those once highly popular door-knockers. You know what I’m talking about. Here’s the sequence:

You hear the sound of a “nock, nock” on your door. You go to the door and peek through your blind and see a man dressed in a slick, formal suit and tie. He holds some dark colored book under his right arm. You open the door.

You: Hello?

Existentialism

Following is the 4th installment of a series on Worldviews. There are seven questions presented by James W. Sire in his book, “The Universe Next Door,” which he says every worldview must answer. This book is used in many colleges for philosophy curriculum, and Sire writes from a Christian perspective. Though influenced somewhat by Sire, what I proceed to give answers to comes from my own words and thoughts. No quotes. If you want Sire’s opinion, let me know and I’ll provide that for you.

One more thing I will mention, in particular relation to this very post, is that I am aware that this topic of Christian Existentialism includes a very broad range of interpretation. This is only my feeble attempt.

1. What is prime reality⎯the really real?
Prime reality is God; this claim, though, is only indirectly appropriate. The existence of God is only affirmed subsequent to self-awareness. Certainty comes first through subjective experience, rather than some objective truth. Reason for meaning, purpose, and significance are not found in or through empirical evidences, therefore a blind leap of faith in God is adopted. God is a proposition taken by faith alone since no empirical evidence gives reason for faith in an eternal, almighty Creator. God⎯the really real⎯then remains propositional to the person believing. In spite of all this, the believing person continues in his belief and begins to align everything else along side, or in contrast with, this propositional God.

2. What is the nature of external reality, that is, the world around us?

Your Prayers Are Needed

Charlie Matthews
And they are appreciated
A pastor friend of mine, Charlie Matthews, could really use some prayer. Charlie is senior pastor of Mason Vineyard Church (MVC). He has stepped up to the plate in helping this church grow, basically by re-planting the church coupled with much enthusiasm. From what I understand, MVC has experienced quite a bit of hardship. Recently, though, MVC has been fortunate to see God move in some really wonderful ways. The last time I talked to Charlie he was sharing with me the amazing things God was doing: intervening for the church, opening doors for a new building, making ends meet. Charlie was really pumped about the exciting opportunities God was creating. And to be honest, I have been excited for him. I am excited for anyone who wants to plant, or re-plant (which can be more difficult), a church and spread the Gospel.

Charlie, though, has Read more
